Aga Khan Palace Pune is a memorial of the great Mahatma Gandhi in Pune city. It was the place where few freedom fighters of India were imprisoned during 1942.

Best Time To Visit Aga Khan Palace Pune: Tourists can visit this palace throughout the year. However, October to March is a good time to visit Pune city due to a pleasant atmosphere.

Aga Khan Palace Pune Information:

This legendary monument was built in 1892 by Imam Sultan Muhammad Shah Agakhan III. It is standing on 19-acre land in Pune. Aga Khan Palace in Pune is one of the biggest landmarks in Indian history. It is a national monument of India’s freedom movement. Palace has a very beautiful structure with lush green gardens surrounding it. This palace holds various things related to Mahatma Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Gandhi.

Visiting this place is one of the must things to do in Pune. This place has ashes of Mahatma Gandhi buried in its grounds.  The Aga Khan Palace Pune was featured in the popular movie Gandhi. The shooting of few scenes was done in this palace. Lacs of tourists gives the visit to this place every year. 

History

During Quit India movement in 1942 aginst British Rule in India, Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi, Dr. Sarojini Naidu, Shri Mahadeobhai Desai and few others were kept under imprisonment in the Aga khan Palace Pune. Shri Mahadeobhai Desai (a long time aid of Mahatma Gandhi) and Kasturba Gandhi passed away in this palace only.

So in order to honor them, the popular architect Charles Correa built their memorials within the grounds of the palace. To honor Mahatma Gandhi and his philosophy, prince Karim El Husseini (Aga Khan IV) donated this palace to Government of India in 1969.

Architecture

This is among the most beautiful monuments of the Maharashtra. The palace has a marvelous white architecture surrounded by gardens which attract everyone’s attention. Marble memorials of these two great leaders are also there on the premises. Aga Khan Palace Pune stands with its grand salons and suites, along with the well-planned gardens. Palace also has beautiful Italian arches. It is also known as the Gandhi National Memorial of Pune.

Since 1980, Gandhi Memorial Society takes care of this palace. Palace authorities regularly arrange various exhibitions for its visitors. One shop in the Aga Khan Palace complex also sells khadi clothes or hand loomed cotton garments.

Museum

Aga Khan Palace Pune holds Mahatma Gandhi’s items like his bed, writing desk, Kasturba’s saree and other clothes, her Chappals (slippers) are maintained properly here. Every year, palace authorities celebrate important days like Martyr’s day (30th January), Mahashivratri (Kasturba’s death anniversary celebrated as Mother’s day), Independence day (15th August), Republic day (26th January), Bapu’s birth anniversary and  Bapu awards ceremony (2nd October).

A letter written by Mahatma Gandhi on the death of his secretary is also there in this museum. Museum also has a very good collection of pictures of Mahatma Gandhi. Various pictures exhibit major incidents of his life. It is one of the best museums in Maharashtra.

TOURIST INFORMATION

Location: Pune-Nagar Road, beyond Fitzgerald Bridge, 2 km away from Bundwada in Yerwada, Pune, Maharashtra.

Time Required: 2 hours are sufficient to see the palace and museum.

Entree Fee: Rs.5 for adults and Rs.2 for children.

Transport: Pune has good connectivity to all important cities in Maharashtra by road, rail and air as well. As this place lies within the city, you can easily reach here from anywhere in the city.

  • Nearest Rail Station: Pune station (7 kms) is the nearest station to reach Aga Khan Palace Pune.
  • Nearest Airport: Pune Airport (5 kms) is the nearest airport to reach this spot.

Timing: Museum remains open on all days of the week from 09:00 am to 06:00 pm. Lunch break takes place between 12.30 pm to 1:30 pm.
