Fort Aguada is a beautiful & charming fort situated near Sinquerim beach in Goa. This fort lies at a considerable height on a small hill near the beach. A few years back, the lower region of the fort has been converted into a beach resort by Taj Hotels. One can experience scenic view, cool sea breeze, and splashing sea waves while looking towards the horizon from the top of the fort. History of Aguada Fort Goa
The fort was built in 1612 by Portuguese for providing fresh water supply to the ships passing by in the Arabian Sea. Another reason for the construction of this fort was to provide protection from the Marathas and Dutch. The area around the fort has a big well and many fresh water springs.
The fort was also used as a jail during the Portuguese rule and continued to be a prison in post-colonial Goa. It is said that the fort had 79 cannons for its defense. The location of Aguada fort Goa had a great strategic importance to Portuguese empire and served as a strong defense base. So this fort is facing the strong waves of ocean efficiently since last 400 years.
The fort consists of two parts: lower fort & upper fort. The lower fort is surrounded by bastions all around the wall. It was built to provide a safe cover to Portuguese ships. The upper fort was built to serve as a watering station for the ships. There is also a gunpowder room in the upper fort and a 4 storied lighthouse.
Aguada fort Goa is majorly built in laterite stone which is easily available in entire Goa. The ramparts of the fort are 5 meters tall and 1.3 meters wide which have successfully withstood severe natural conditions. This fort was constructed very strategically and remained armed all the time. Due to this, it acted as a great battling station against Maratha empire and Dutch army. It never fell into the hands of any enemy.
- Lighthouse: There is a 4 storeyed and 13m tall lighthouse on the fort which was built in 1864. It was used as an oil lamp but later renovated and modernized in 1976. This lighthouse is considered among oldest of its type in entire Asia. It was built to guide ships to reach safely into the harbor. The light house stopped functioning a few years back.
- Fort Aguada Jail: Though a major part of the fort is in ruins, some buildings are still in good condition and have been converted into a prison. This prison holds criminals who has done crimes like trafficking, narcotics abuse, and drugs sale. It remains closed for tourists.
