History of The Fort

In 1684, the Portuguese army surrendered to the Sambhaji Maharaj’s Maratha army. But the local people were not happy with this and had many conflicts with Maratha rulers. In 1717, the Marathas withdrew their force. So Portuguese again took over again and reconstructed the Chapora fort in Goa. The newly built fort had some good features. The reconstructed fort was provided with underground tunnels for escape in case of an emergency. The position of each bastion was perfect for operating cannons on fort’s irregular shape.

The fort was constructed to strengthen the security of this region. Various enemies like Marathas from the east region, Bahamani kings from the north region and some local chieftains was looking forward to gaining the control of Chapora fort in Goa. The fort was entirely deserted by the Portuguese in 1892.

Architecture of Chapora fort

The red laterite bastion of fort was built by the Portuguese in 1617 in addition to earlier structure. Fort has sharp slopes on all sides and irregular boundaries. This big fort has small & narrow main gate. It is covered by sea on 2 sides and river on the other side. You can see massive ramparts and scattered Muslim tombstones that are still left in this fort.

Heads of the two tunnels are still there which were used to provide the supply routes for the besieged defenders. Due to a higher elevation, the position of the Chapora fort in Goa was defensive and it was not easy to capture.
