Gateway Of India Mumbai History
Gateway of India history is interesting. It was constructed in 1924 just to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to Mumbai. The foundation of this monument was deployed by the Governor of Bombay-Sir George Sydenham Clarke on March 31, 1911. The design of this historical structure was finalised by architect George Wittet. In spite the plan of a structure was approved in early 1914, the improvements were completed in 1919. It is one of the best monuments in the Maharashtra.
The foundations of Gateway of India Mumbai were finished in 1920. Subsequently, the framework & making of this architectural marvel was completed in 1924. It took about 5 years for the construction of this magnificent architectural marvel. The structure was opened to the public on December 4, 1924. Most noteworthy thing is – this was the place from where the endmost British soldiers troops left India.
Architecture Of Structure
The structure is a beautiful big arch made up of basalt along with another of materials. This building is a combination of the Indo-sarcenic type architecture. The decorations on the Gateway Of India Mumbai are of Hindu style while Muslim architectural styles dominate the arch construction. Yellow basalt stone and strong imperishable concrete are used in the construction of this monument. As a result, the structure has very high strength.
The height of the arch is 26 meter and the central dome is 48 feet in diameter. The major 4 turrets of Gateway Of India Mumbai feature designs of intricate latticework. There are few steps on the back side of the arch that enters into the Arabian Sea. In addition to outer wall designs, inside of the dome also has rich designs!
