Grishneshwar jyotirlinga temple (or Ghrushneshwar or Ghushmeshwar temple) in Aurangabad is one of the 5 Jyotirlingas in Maharashtra.

Location Address: Near Ellora caves, Verul, 31 km from Aurangabad, Khultabad Taluka, Maharashtra (India).

Best Time To Visit: Devotees can visit this temple at any time of the year. But July to February is the best season to visit this temple when the temperature of Aurangabad remains soothing!

Grishneshwar Jyotirlinga Temple Information

Ghrushneshwar temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga shrines (Temples of Lord Shiva) in India. It lies near Verul in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. This temple is one of the most ancient and holiest shrines of India. The temple is exactly situated in a town known as Ilapur. It is hardly 2 km away from the world famous UNESCO World Heritage SiteEllora Caves. The temple of Grishneshwar is the last / 12th Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva.

Generally, the temple remains free from the crowd. But a large number of devotees visit Grishneshwar during the auspicious occasion of Mahashivratri. Devotees can perform their Abhishek themselves at Grishneshwar jyotirlinga temple in Aurangabad. Other festivals like Deepawali, Navaratri and Vinayak Chaturthi are celebrated enthusiastically in this temple. The village has a serene environment and does not have much rush as compared to other popular temples in Maharashtra. A devotee of any religion can enter in this temple without any hesitation.

Grishneshwar Temple History

This temple was originally built more than 2000 years ago. It was re-constructed by Maloji Raje Bhosale of Verul (the great grandfather of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj) in the 16th century. Then later by the Maratha Princess – Ahilyabai Holkar in the 18th century. The name ‘Grishneshwar’ means: Shiva originated by friction. According to legends goddess Parvati (wife of Shiva) was born here in a tribal village and then they came together at this spot.

Bhosale family (the chief dynasty of Verul) has been worshipping Grishneshwar jyotirlinga temple in Aurangabad since very ancient times. They had unexpectedly found a hidden treasure in the snake pit. That money was used to renovate the temple and build a lake in Shikhar Shinganapur. This temple has multiple stories upon its establishment. So the conclusion for real one is difficult to guess!

Architecture

This is an excellent Hindu religious temple of lord Shiva having nice architecture. The temple is smallest of all 12 Jyotirlinga’s having dimensions 240 feet long and x 185 feet wide. Temple structure is still strong and beautiful as ever. The temple complex is big and has a large compound wall on all 4 sides. Grishneshwar jyotirlinga temple comprises of various sections like Garbha Griha (sanctum sanctorum), Antarala (antechamber) and the Sabha Mandap. Sabha mandap hall has total 24 columns. These columns are having adorable carvings on them.

The Shivlinga faces in the east direction and has Nandi bull at the entrance. Temple top has 5 layered Shikhar that rises in decreasing height. There are bulls at the top of each corner of Shikhar and a monkey behind it. The inner chamber of Grishneshwar jyotirlinga temple in Aurangabad has an underground chamber. This temple is full of magnificent carvings and is a splendid example of medieval architecture.

The temple material is mainly comprising of spotted red sandstone. The dimensions of temple Garbhagriha are 17 feet x 17 feet. There are beautiful paintings on the walls of a temple. Sculptures depict a pantheon of Indian gods including Brahma, Ganesh, Vishnu, the marriage of Shiva & Parvati and other Maratha heroes. It is one of the must-visit spots in Aurangabad.

Grishneshwar Temple Timings

Temple remains open daily between 05:30 am to 09:30 pm. However, during Shravan month, temple starts early at 03:00 am and closes late by 11:00 pm.

Time Required: Apart from the line of Darshan, 1 to 1.5 hours are sufficient to explore the temple surroundings!

Eating Stuff: There are plenty of small restaurants and eateries nearby the temple.

Hotels / Accommodation Options: There are few small hotels and lodges near the temple, but it is a better to stay in Aurangabad for better facilities and options.

How To Reach

Being one of the Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, a huge number of people flocks to Grishneshwar jyotirlinga temple . Aurangabad has very nice connectivity with a road, railway and air. A large number of MSRTC and tourist buses ply between Aurangabad and popular tourist cities in Maharashtra. If you are going from Nashik, then there is a left turn 24 km before Aurangabad. You will notice signboards after leaving Vijapur town. The temple is 9 km away from this point. Therefore, you do not need to go to Aurangabad and come back.

  • By Road: Once you reach Aurangabad, then you can catch a taxi or take an MTDC bus tour to reach this spot. A regular bus service is available from the Aurangabad to Grishneshwar. The temple is 179 km away from Nashik, 257 km away from Pune, 289 km away from Nanded, 330 km away from Mumbai, 359 km away from Solapur 490 km from Nagpur and 568 km away from Hyderabad
  • Nearest Railway Station: Aurangabad station is the nearest railhead to reach this temple. The station is 31 km away from the temple. Many private vehicles are available outside the station which will take you to the Grishneshwar jyotirlinga temple in Aurangabad.
  • Nearest Airport: Aurangabad airport (37 km away) is the closest airport to this temple. This airport receives 7 flight daily from cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Udaipur & Jaipur. On an average, Aurangabad airport does a transportation of 700 passengers daily.
