Kalaram Mandir Information

This temple is among the major attractions in Nashik city of Maharashtra. This temple is located in the Panchavati region of Nashik & is dedicated to Lord Ram. Kalaram temple was built by Sardar Odhekar of Peshwa dynasty in 1792. It is the biggest of all the temples in Nashik. Kalaram mandir Nashik hosts black stone idol of Lord Rama. It is one of the popular attractions of Nashik.

The name of this temple is derived from this black idol (Kala=Black). There are also idols of Sita Mata and Lord Lakshman along with the main idol of Lord Ram, both of them are black in color. A large number of devotees visit this temple every day. This temple looks similar to Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple in appearance.

Architecture

Kalaram mandir Nashik is a fine example of ancient Marathi architecture. The temple is completely built in black stones and there are total 4 entrance doors, each door is facing East, West, North and South directions. The temple entrance is on the east side via a beautiful curved arch. The stones used for the construction of this temple were brought from Ramshej Hills near Nashik. The surrounding wall of this temple has total 96 pillars. Kalaram temple is 70 feet high with a gold plated peak which looks amazing.  The Kalash of the temple comprises of 32 ton gold.

Around 12 years took to construct the Kalaram mandir Nashik with the help of 2000 workers which costing 23 Lakhs rupees in those days. The sabhamandap was constructed later in the year 1799. The black idol of Lord Hanuman is there at the main entrance of the temple. Lord Dattatreya’s footprint impressions are also there on a stone beneath a very old tree next to the Kalaram temple. All these makes this temple one of the most visited temples in Maharashtra.

Kalaram Mandir Satyagraha

In earlier days Harijans were not allowed inside the temple but Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar done Satyaqgraha in 1930, after which the Harijans were also allowed into the temple. Festivals of Ramnavami, Dasara and Chaitra Padwa are celebrated every year in Kalaram temple. Rathyatra is the main attraction of Kalaram mandir Nashik which is celebrated during Ramnavami (Ram Janmotsava). Temple authorities decorate the entire temple with beautiful flowers during these festivals.

History of Kalaram Mandir Nashik

The construction of temple was started in 1780 and completed in in 1792. It was done under the guidance of Sardar Rangarao Odhekar and Sawaee Madhavrao Peshwa. Rangarao Odhekar once had a dream that a black statue of Lord Ram is there in the Godavari river of Nashik. So according to his dream, he undertook the operation to find that statue and he actually got it from the river.  He also found few other statues. The river section where these statues were found was given name as – Ramkund. Shri ram along with wife Seeta and cousin brother Laxman stayed in the Panchavati region near this temple during his 14 years of Vanvaas. So people believe this land to be very sacred due to past presence of Lord Ram.
