Navegaon bandh national park is a well-known wildlife sanctuary for birds and animals. It has spread over the region of Navegaon dam.

Best Time To Visit:  September to May is the best time to visit Navegaon bandh national park. Winter season is the best season to spot birds and Summer for other Wildlife.

Navegaon Bandh National Park Information

Situated in the catchment area of Navegaon Dam (Bandh in Marathi), it is one of the old & popular sanctuaries in Maharashtra. Navegaon National Park is especially well-known for migratory Flamingo Birds, which migrates from Siberia. It is very big National Park which was established in the 18th century only. Sanctuary has dense forest cover all over the region.

Navegaon bandh national park has spread over an area of about 135 sq kms. This region has a deer park, 3 landscaped gardens, an aviary and Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. Watchtowers inside the forest enable you to observe the wildlife and forest region peacefully!

Night Safaris

Facilities of thrilling night safaris are available in this national park. This national park has a network of roads for vehicles with proper signs & tracks. So tourists can experience the thrill of wildlife in Moonlight & calm surroundings inside Navegaon bandh national park. Total 5 watch towers and 7 watch cabins are also there to experience the wildlife from less distance. There is also a small museum, interpretation center and a library for the information of tourists. Every year, thousands of wildlife lovers visit this sanctuary.

Flora & Fauna

26 species of mammals, 9 species of reptiles and over 350 species of birds live in this national park.

Animals: You can spot various animals like Leopards, Tigers, Bears, Buffaloes, Nilgais, Sambars, Bisons, Chitals, Wild boars, Wild Dogs, Langoors and panthers inside Navegaon bandh national park.

Birds: Almost 350 varieties of birds live in Navegaon national Park. Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary in Navegaon is a home to about 60% of the bird species found in Maharashtra. You can see birds like Kingfishers, Crested hawk Eagles, Scarlet Minivets, Paradise Fly Catchers and many more birds over here. A large number of Ducks, Cranes, Waterfowl, Eagle & migratory birds visit this lake. Sights of an eagle eating fish nearby this lake are wonderful. Thousands of migratory Flamingo birds flock this lake & remain there for 6 months during the winter season.

Trees: The vegetation mainly comprises of Southern mixed dry deciduous type. Trees like Behada, Moha, Teak, Bhel, Bhor, Haldu, Jamun, Kawat, Mahua, Ain, Anjan, Avali, Ain are there in a large number.

Navegaon Lake

There is also a wonderful artificial lake inside Navegaon bandh national park. As this lake in inside the forest, it has very clear water and serene surroundings. Lake is surrounded by 7 mountains and spreads over an area of 11 sq kms. Boating facilities are also available in Navegaon lake to observe the wildlife closely. It is among the most scenic lakes in Maharashtra.

Navegaon lake has a small island in the lake where birds usually stay. This island is known as the Mal Dongar. The thick forest has an important watering hole for animals known as –The Kamkazari. There are almost 200 Natural Reservoirs in Navegaon. The weather inside the Navegaon bandh national park remains very pleasant in the winter season.

Navegaon Dam

The dam was constructed in the 18th century on a local river in Vidharbha region of Maharashtra. Eventually, with times, the sanctuary region around the dam has been developed into the national Park and bird sanctuary. It is an earth fill dam, with a capacity of 11022 cubic miles. Navegaon dam has a height of 11.58 m and length of 625 m.

It was constructed by Kolu Patel Kohli in the early 18th century. There are total 7 mountains surrounding Navegaon dam and every peak has a temple. Tourists can climb these mountains and visit the temples. One can see breath-taking views of the surrounding region from here.

How To Reach

The core sanctuary is just 10 kms away from main Navegaon town. This national park is 137 kms away from the Nagpur. You can catch hired vehicles from Nagpur to reach this national park. Nagpur has good connectivity to all major cities in Maharashtra.

  • Nearest Railway Station: Deulgaon is the nearest railhead to Navegaon national park. This railhead is just 2 kms away from Navegaon bandh national park. This station lies on the Chandrapur-Gondia Railway line. Gondia (65kms) is the other option to board the train!
  • Nearest Bus Route: You can easily reach Navegaon by taking ST buses from Nagpur, Gondia & Arjuni. One can also catch buses till Sakoli & then to Navegaon.
  • Nearest Airport: Nagpur is the nearest airport to Navegaon sanctuary. It is 142 kms away from the sanctuary.

Park Timing: Park remains open to tourists from 04:00 am to 07:00 pm every day.

Accommodation: Forest Rest Houses, Youth Hotel and MTDC Rooms. Few cottages and huts are available inside the sanctuary for accommodation purpose. You can book MTDC rooms via this link.

Eating Stuff: Forest rest houses inside Navegaon bandh national park provide decent quality food.
