The present Powai Lake Mumbai area was actually a valley. Powai was a central village having few huts around it. Many streams originating from the rain waters of the lowest slopes of the Western Ghats (which is now seen as the hillock on the South end of the Lake) and streams from the Eastern & Northeastern slopes of hills used to supply water to lake. So the British authorities planned to supply water to Mumbai City by creating a lake at this spot.
In 1891, two stone dams were built across 2 hillocks each dam was and still is about 10m in height. The catchment area of the lake at that time was 370 acres or 2.10 km2. Average rainfall at Powai is about 2540 mm and the lake overflows for about 60 days each year.[caption id="attachment_556" align="aligncenter" width="700"] Amazing Sunset View![/caption]
