Prabalgad Fort Trek – A offbeat trekking destination near Panvel

Prabalgad fort trek near Panvel is a popular hiking destination around Mumbai. Its scenic trek route and camping opportunities attract a lot of adventure lovers!

Location Address: Prabalmachi Plateau, near Panvel, Maharashtra (India).

Best Time To Visit: September to January is the best time to visit this fort. However, you can visit here all year round.

Elevation: The fort lies at a height of 701 meters (2300 feet) above mean sea level.

Prabalgad Fort Trek Information:

This is a twin fort of Kalavantin Durg near Panvel city of Maharashtra. Both of these forts stand next to each other in the region of Karjat & Panvel. Prabalgad fort is popular due to its beautiful trekking route and camping opportunities. It is one of the best trekking places in Maharashtra. The peak of this fort along with Kalavantin is visible from the Mumbai Pune expressway.

A large number of waterfalls take birth on these mountains in monsoon season. Its lush greenery, foggy weather, pleasant atmosphere and exciting trek route calls hundreds of adventure enthusiasts. You can experience the splendid beauty of Sahyadri Mountain Range in Prabalgad fort trek.  Peaks of Kalavantin Durg, Chanderi Fort, Matheran Hill Station, Irshalgad and Karnala Fort are visible from the top. You can sit calmly and explore the surrounding region from the top!

Prabalgad Trek Route

Thakurwadi is the base village of this trek. Trek has 2 different phases – 1st phase is Thakurwadi village to Prabalmachi Plateau and 2nd phase is Prabalmachi to Prabalgad. Once you cross the Prabalmachi village after 1st phase, you will notice a diversion. From there, the right turn leads to the Prabalgad fort whereas straight route leads to the Kalavantin fort.

The right diversion ahead of the village takes you to this fort. Prabalgad fort trek route involves a walking along the mountain. It takes about 1 hour to reach atop from Prabalmachi. The fort has a temple of Lord Ganesha and some stone ramparts. The peak of this fort gives magnificent views of surrounding North Konkan area. You can get a splendid view of the adjacent Kalavantin peak from the top. It was built to keep a watch on Panvel & Karjat region.

Note: Sometimes minor landslides occur on the trek route which involves sliding of boulders right on the Prabalgad fort trek route. Hence it is advisable to be cautious & take care while visiting Prabagad fort.

Prabalgad Trek Difficulty Level:

Medium. This trek belongs to moderate level trekking destinations. It takes about 2 hours to reach up to Prabalmachi from the Thakurwadi. Then it takes 1 more hour to reach atop. The overall trek distance is approximately 6 km.

How To Reach

You can reach Thakurwadi easily from Panvel city via ST Bus, Auto-rickshaws or private jeeps.

  • By Road: ST buses and 8 seater rickshaws are available outside the Panvel station until Thakurwadi village. Prabalgad fort trek route starts from this village.
  • Nearest Railway Station: Panvel station is the convenient rail station to reach the base village. This station lies on the Harbour railway line of Mumbai. You can take private vehicles outside the station to reach the base village.
  • Nearest Airport: Mumbai airport is the nearest airport near Prabalgad Fort.

Accommodation/ Staying Options: Plabalmachi plateau has a big area to pitch tents and make your own campsite. Even local villagers from Thakurwadi offer the homestays at a reasonable price.

Restaurants Nearby/ Eating Stuff: Some restaurants in the Prabalmachi village serves basic veg and non-veg food. You can get food like Veg rice plate, Chicken rice plate, Chicken-Bhakri, Zunka-Bhakri, Egg Bhurji & Omelette, Dal-Rice, and Bhaji etc.
