Shree Shantadurga Devi temple in Goa is a very spiritual Hindu temple. It is located at Kavlem, Ponda taluka of North Goa and at a distance of 33 kms from capital City-Panaji. It is a very beautiful temple and is dedicated to Goddess Shantadurga-the Goddess of Peace. Shantadurga temple is one of the most important and the biggest temples in Goa. This temple was built by the Marathas during the period from 1713 AD to 1738 AD.
Just like Basilica of Bom Jesus Church, this temple has very big complex nearby. It has a beautiful natural surrounding & serene environment. So if you are done with seeing famous beaches in North Goa, you can see this beautiful temple.
Shree Shantadurga temple has a marvelous idol of Goddess Shree Durga. The idol has Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva on each side. As per Hindu mythology, Shree Jagdamba Devi stopped the violent & extreme war going on between Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Goddess made peace (Shanti) between them and hence the temple is named so. The Shantadurga Devi idol was initially placed at Keloshi. But the location of an idol of the Goddess was shifted to Kavlem due to the rule of Portuguese.
The idol of the goddess was stolen by Pathans from the Shree Shantadurga Temple during 1898 A.D. Then in 1901, the new idol was installed on Wednesday, the Phalgun Shukl Dashmi-Shake 1823 (i.e. on 19 March 1902). This new idol was sculpted by Shri Laxman Krishnaji Gaitonde and still at its place till date.
Shantadurga Temple Architecture
Shree Shantadurga Temple in Goa displays Indo-Portuguese type of architecture. The main features of the temple are a flat dome encircled by balustrades, Pyramidal Top, and Roman-arched windows. The temple is painted with maroon, white & peach colors which look beautiful. There is a Nayanmanohar Deepsthamba (Lightning Tower) which is another amazing attraction. This Deepsthamba is lighted with oil lamps during the festival season which looks magnificent in the night. There are big buildings of Agarshala on each side of the temple. There is also a big lake beyond the compound wall in front of the temple!
Shree Shantadurga Temple celebrates annual festival every year in the month of December. The Jatra at this temple is very famous among tourists. Every year, festivals like Muktabharani Utsav, Ram Navami, Diwali, Palkhi Utsav, Tulsi Vivah and Kala Utsav are celebrated enthusiastically at this temple!
