The historical building of town lies on the road going towards old palace from Dasara square. Maharashtra government runs & takes care of this museum. What To See
2 European canons are placed near the entrance of the museum. Out of these 2 cannons, 1 cannon dates back to 1609 having inscriptions with a relief of god Mars. There are various relics, war weapons, stone sculptures, paintings, war arms, sandalwood artifacts and many other things in Town hall museum Kolhapur. The construction of the town hall museum is of Neo-gothic architecture type. It was built by Charles Mant as a town hall of Kolhapur city. The foundation of the structure was laid in 1872 and the construction was completed in 1876. The front entrance of the museum is adorned with towers having pyramidal metal roofs. The building has Corinthian columns having sculptures of monkeys and arches have sculptures of demons.
State Archaeological Department have an administrative responsibility for the garden and Town hall museum Kolhapur. This museum was renovated back in 2012 which has modified it in a better way. Total 7 new galleries have been added to exhibit artifacts which are namely portraits, sculpture, paintings, weapons, archaeological, metal and miscellaneous. Popular architects – Vijay Gajbar and Amaraja Nimbalkar carried out the renovation of the museum.
Town Hall Museum History
Dr. HD Sankalia and Dr. MG Dikshit from Pune were chosen to do the work of excavations on a Brahmagiri mountain. After their lot of hard work, many ancient objects were discovered in this mountain. The number of objects was so huge that it was essential to preserve them in a safe and proper place.
So several attempts were done to store those artifacts in a good place like one Jain Ashram and Home of Dr. HD Sankalia. But space was not enough for them so eventually, this building was built!
Town Hall Garden
The garden of Town hall museum Kolhapur has spread over a large area of 8 acres. There is a beautiful sculpture of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj inside this garden. It also has one glass house that was built in 1904. This garden adds beauty to the Townhall museum campus.
