Vengurla is a small town in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra. Vengurla is situated on the Konkan coast and is famous for its nice beaches. This beach lies towards the southern end of Maharashtra coast. The Vengurla Beach is one of the popular beaches in Maharashtra. It offers a perfect relaxation spots to tourists. Vengurla has a serene & soothing environment. It is a neighboring town of famous tourist spot-Malvan. Vengurla beach is located near to the North Goa & it is considered as the best alternative for Goa. Vengurla has fewer crowds, less pollution & less commercialization as compared to Goa. Weather & natural beauty of Vengurla is exactly same as that of Goa. Due to these reasons, many tourists make a point to visit Vengurla instead of Goa. It is located at 110 kms from North Goa.
Vengurla has total five beaches along its long stretch. All of these beaches has beautiful white sands & located along different villages. These beaches are Nivati beach, Mochemad beach, Shiroda beach, Sagareshwar beach and Vayangani beach. The Vengurla beach is surrounded by a semicircular range of hills. These hills comprise of the dense lush green vegetation of coconut, cashew, mango and different trees of berries.
There are temples of Shree Sateri Goddess and the Lord Rameshwar nearby Vengurla beach. Vengurla Rocks or Burnt Island was the center of trade between 16th and 18th centuries. Vengurla is also described in various books of history. The mountains of Tulas, Mochemad & Dabholi are there on the east, south and north sides of the Vengurla. Vengurla lighthouse and Vengurla Jetty are the other major tourist attractions in Vengurla town.
Vengurla it blessed with rich cultural heritage & beauty. Vengurla region was ruled by Sultan Adil Shah of Vijapur dynasty. In the year 1638, Johns Van Twist gained approval from AdilShah to start a trade settlement center at Vengurla. Johns Van Twist was a Dutch command appointed the person. Later Dutch authorities built a sea fort around this trade center in Vengurla. Vengurla was one of the busiest ports during the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This port was a very busy trade center between the 16th and 18th centuries.
Dutch had strong control on Vengurla region till 1682. Vengurla beach served as a strong-armed naval station for the Dutch. Later Sawant’s & then British took the control of this fort. It was twice burned to the ground as it was the target of repetitive attacks and plunders between 1664 & 1812. Sindhudurg fort and Padmagad fort are located in the neighboring town of Malvan. It is said there is an underground tunnel that links these two forts.

ST (Maharashtra State Transport) buses regularly ply to Vengurla from Mumbai, Pune, Kolhapur, Kudal, Sawantwadi & other cities.
