Mahalakshmi Dhobi Ghat (Laundry in English) is a well-known spot located in Mahalaxmi region of Mumbai. Every day, a large number of cloth washers (Dhobi’s) wash thousands of clothes manually at this place. It is considered as world’s largest open air laundry. Dhobi means washerman who washes the clothes by hand instead of modern machines. It is a totally human-powered mass laundry.
The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai grants about 1000 washing space on rent individually to the dhobis. Washing work starts early in the morning even before sunrise. Clothes are washed, soaked, slapped, spun & ironed at Dhobi Ghat in Mumbai. After ironing, the clothes are delivered to their respective owners. If you are a photographer, it is a great place for you to have the shoot. The colourful view of the Ghat stretch is really amazing!
There are many lines of open-air concrete wash tubs along with Stones. They (dhobis) immerse pieces of clothes in the water containing soap powder. After some time, they remove those immersed clothes and then hammer them on the flogging stone nearby water tub. Following to hammering, the clothes are rinsed well with the hands. Then the clothes are hung on the thread to get dried. In the end, each cloth is ironed well and then supplied to each owner. Each dhobi usually stands near his washing space up to 15-16 hours/day.
The system of Dhobis is quite similar to Dabbawalla’s of Mumbai. Each cloth passes through hands of various dhobis. So each owner makes a small code mark on the inside of the cloth. Code mark is made by using a permanent ink on a small piece of cotton and tied to the cloth. This code helps to identify the laundry owner and get the correct clothes to each owner. Due to this system, not a single piece of clothes gets stolen or misplaced. Famous Dhobi Ghat Movie of Aamir Khan was shot at this place only!
Life of Dhobis
About 200 dhobis work & live at h along with their families. This occupation of dhobis is handed over from old generation to next generation. Some dhobis also have modern laundry washing machines at ground level. However, most of the people wash clothes by hand only.
Every day about 5,00,000 clothes are washed at Dhobi Ghat in Mumbai. Here, washing activities are carrying out since last 140+ years. About 1000 concrete wash troughs are there at this spot. This place receives the clothes from different hotels, homes, hospitals, halls and other places from the Mumbai. It is one of the best sightseeing spots in Mumbai among foreigners as well as local tourists. One can get a good panoramic view of this place from the flyover bridge of Mahalaxmi railway station.
Tourists can even take the private tour of this place. Go downside along the stairs of the entrance of the Ghat. Then take a left turn from the bottom of the stairs and walk a little. From there, you will notice people who carry out guided tour. This tour costs you only about 100 rs.
You can see very beautiful clothes drying & washing at different zones. The view of different colours over the large area is simply awesome. Their method of washing & keeping of clothes at Dhobi Ghat in Mumbai is very systematic. It is a nice place for photographers as you can observe plenty of colour sheds over here. It is spread over an area of 10 acres at Mahalakshmi region of Mumbai.
Best Time To Visit: Tourists can visit Dhobi Ghat in Mumbai all year round. Morning time is the best time to visit when dhobis wash clothes by beating them! In the early afternoon, visitors can see the dhobis hanging clothes to get dried. 4:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. is the peak business hour of Ghat.
Timing: The place remains active during the day time only. Time wise, this place remains open throughout the day.
How To Reach: It is accessible from any part of the Mumbai city by various city transport options like Trains, BEST Buses, Taxis, Cabs etc. It is situated about 5 kms north of Colaba. If you have the entire day to spend then take a walk from Colaba. While walking, you will notice different amazing parts of Mumbai. It is about a 25-minute drive from Colaba and Kala Ghada.
