Best Time To Visit: The sanctuary is open all year round for tourists. But October to February is the best time to visit this sanctuary; you have to take prior permission of the Chief Wildlife Warden of Goa located at Panaji.
Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary Information:
This is a beautiful bird sanctuary located in Goa. It is named after India’s famous and influential ornithologist- Dr Salim Ali. It is the only bird sanctuary in Goa which has spread over an area of about 440 acres (178 Ha) or 1.8 square km. This sanctuary is home to a large number of bird species and every year huge number of migratory birds visits here from the far Arctic region. This is a home to many migratory birds because of extensive food and shelter offered here during the winter season (October to December ending). The sanctuary is actually a small island!
Chorao Island is covered with mangrove swamps & scrub. Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary has exceptional cover and vegetation which provides a lot of options of shelter for birds. You can spot the different varieties of local birds, coastal birds and migratory foreign birds in this sanctuary. It has various bird watching points. You can also take a boat-ride to observe the birds from the Riverside. Sanctuary has more than 400 different types of bird’s variety inside it. This is certainly one of the best bird sanctuaries in India.
Bird Species in Sanctuary
You can see rare varieties of birds like curlews, redshank, woodpeckers, egrets, herons, kingfishers, eagles, sandpipers, Myna, redshank, kites, hoopoe etc in Dr Salim Ali bird sanctuary. Other than birds, some animals like foxes, the black drongo, jackals, and crocodiles can also be spotted in this region. Water creatures like different fishes, shrimps, mudskipper, prawns, and crabs can also be seen. Dusk and dawn are the best times for bird watching. Various birds can be spotted on the tree branches and tree-tops.
Try to reach the sanctuary in the early morning when birds are most active. Wear proper footwear, carry binoculars and camera so that you will not miss a great shot! Just be careful about few things like Do not run randomly inside and do not try to feed animals anything. The surrounding environment of the sanctuary is always cheerful due to the chirping of birdies! This is a perfect place for nature and adventure lovers!
IMPORTANT TOURIST INFORMATION
Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary Timings:
The sanctuary remains open for tourists everyday between 06:00 am to 06:00 pm. Authorities keep the sanctuary open even on public holidays. So you can visit over here at any time of the year.
Time Required: 4 to 5 hours are required to explore this sanctuary properly. It is advisable to visit the sanctuary in the morning. Then there are greater chances of spotting more birds in less time period!
Entry Fee: Sanctuary authorities charge Rs.10/- per person for Indian tourists and Rs.100/- per person for foreign tourists. (Please note that rates may change over certain time period).
How To Reach:
You can reach here by catching a bus, taxi or cab up to Ribandar jetty. You have to cross the Mandovi River by ferry in order to reach the Chorao Island. The Sanctuary lies close to the ferry dock and has a signboard in the direction of sanctuary.
- Nearest Railway Station: Madgaon (30 km) is the nearest rail-head to reach this sanctuary. You can catch hired vehicles like cars, taxies or bikes from station to reach here.
- Nearest Airport: Goa International Airport (40 km) is the nearest airport to this sanctuary.
EATING STUFF: It is advisable to carry your own food & plenty of water while visiting this sanctuary (please make sure that you don’t throw any litter in the sanctuary area). Another option is you can have food at the place where you are staying and then head towards the sanctuary.
