Kalsubai Peak Information:
Kalsubai is the mountain having Maharashtra’s highest peak situated in Akola, Ahmednagar district. Kalsubai trek is one of the must visit trekking destinations in Maharashtra. Kalsubai peak has the height of 1646 meters (or 5400 feets) located in northern Sahyadri mountain range. It is popularly called as Everest of the Maharashtra. Kalsubai Shikhar is situated on the border of Ahmadnagar & Nashik districts. Every year, thousands of trekkers perform Kalsubai trek to reach the top of Kalsubai peak. You don’t need any types of equipment to trek on this mountain, simply strong will is needed to trek on this rugged hilly steep terrain!
The Kalsubai Shikhar proudly stands in the Kalsubai – Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary. The peak is visited throughout the year by hikers. On 28th December 2014, one enthusiastic couple did their wedding at the Kalsubai temple present at the top!
Kalsubai Trek Route
Bari village is the base village to start the trek. Trek route to Kalsubai peak is elevated but not very much difficult. There are many trekking & animal routes through which hikers can reach the Kalsubai peak. The Kalsubai trek route is well marked with directions towards the peak. For the safety of your group, you can take a guide from Bari village. Trek route remains covered with dense fog during most of the times in monsoon season.
3 iron ladders are installed on the Kalsubai trek route by local people. At first, hikers have to come across stone carved steps and later ladders from Bari Village. The final 3rd ladder takes you to the peak. Many trekkers also perform the night trek in the winter season. The Sunrise from Kalsubai peak gives you an unforgettable experience. The Wind flows at very high speed along with cold temperature during night times. One can see various reptiles such as snakes & lizards taking sun-bath near the iron ladders during the winter season.
Though the Kalsubai trek route is quite difficult, but one can get magnificent views of the surrounding while climbing the peak. The greenery of the surrounding region during monsoon months is simply astonishing. It takes around 3 hours to reach the kalsubai Shikhar from base Village. There is also a well near the last ladder but the water is not potable during the summer. It is a dream of every trekking professional to climb Kalsubai peak at least once.
History of Kalsubai Shikhar
A small temple of Kalsubai is there at the top of the peak. Kalsu was a household worker who worked on one condition that she should not be asked to clean house or pots but once she was ordered to do that, she did it as per the order but after that she immediately climbed the mountain and stayed there until death!
On every Tuesday and Thursday, Pooja of Kalsubai Temple Deity is done by a local priest. At the top, local people have their stalls of pooja materials. The occasion of Navaratri is celebrated very enthusiastically in this temple. Many stalls are put up at the top of Kalsubai peak during Navratri. Jatra (fair) is also organized at the top during Navratri.
Peak Top & Surrounding Region
- The top of the Kalsubai peak has plain terrain. There is enough space for food stalls & Pooja Material stalls. You can trek a rest here after long & exhausting Kalsubai trek.
- Bhandardara Dam: This dam is situated at 6 kms from Kalsubai. The panoramic views of backwaters of Bhandardara are absolutely stunning!
- Mountain ranges having various popular forts like Saptashrungi, Matheran Hill Station, Dhodap, Ahivant, Harishchandragad Fort, Ramsej, Achala, Markandya Rawlya, Jawlya, Koldher, Aundh, Alang, Madan, Kulang and Vishramgad can be spotted from here in clear weather. This region is part of the Kalsubai-Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary which spreads from Kalasubai to Harischandragad in Akola.
- Arthur Lake: One can see the Arthur lake surrounded by dense forests from the top. This lake is situated amidst massive Sahyadri mountain range. Pravara River is the source of water of this dam. Water from this lake is released at regular intervals. Various Umbrella falls establish when the water is released.
Best Time To Visit: August To December is the best time to accomplish Kalsubai trek.
Time Taken To Trek: About 3 hours are required to trek till the Kalsubai peak.
Difficulty: Kalsubai trek difficulty level is not very tough. Kalsubai trek route is of medium level nature.
How To Reach:
-By Road: Bari is the base village of Kalsubai peak. You can reach Bari by taking an early morning bus from Igatpuri town. Igatpuri is situated on the Mumbai-Nashik Highway (National Highway-3). Board any bus going to Pune and alight at Bari village. The first bus leaves from Igatpuri by 5 am. The distance between Igatpuri to Bari Village is 40 kms. Almost all ST (State Transport) buses stop at Bari. Another better option is to take bus or jeep till Ghoti town (7kms) and then hire a jeep from Ghoti to Bari village.
Road Route From Mumbai= Mumbai → Igatpuri → Ghoti → Bari
Road Route From Pune= Pune → Sangamner → Rajer → Bhandardara → Bari
-Nearest Railway Station: Igatpuri Junction station & Kasara are the closest & convenient railway stations to reach Kalsubai peak. The distance between Igatpuri & base village is 40 kms. Taxies are available from the stations till Bari village.
-Nearest Airport: Mumbai airport is the nearest airport to reach this spot. It is located at 138kms from the base village -Bari. Taxi services regularly ply between Mumbai & Nashik so one can easily reach Igatpuri from the Mumbai Airport.
It is advisable to go by hired vehicle instead of bus or train. As you have to change vehicles few times, it would be hectic & tiring. You must feel energetic at the starting point of the Kalsubai trek. So the group of few people can take a cab from your city till Bari or at least till Ghoti.
Eating Stuff: Carry your own food & as much of water as you can. There is no water or food available on the way to the peak. One can make an arrangement of food at Bari village. Local village people provide delicious food on request!
Where To Stay: There is no accommodation facility available atop the Kalsubai peak. Kalsu temple at the top can accommodate only 2-3 people. However, hikers can make their camp at the top & stay there. Hikers can also stay at Bari village.
Bhandardara hill station locality is another good option to stay during an overnight trek. Bhandardara is situated at about 20 kms from Bari village. A Large group can make their camp on the banks of the Bhandardara Lake!
