Naneghat Trek Information:
Naneghat is a mountain pass in the great Sahyadri mountain range near Junnar in Pune district, Maharashtra. It is among the oldest ancient trade routes; Nane means “coin” and Ghat means “Pass”. This mountain pass was used as a trade way between Junnar & Kalyan by Satavahana during 200 BCE to 190 CE. This mountain pass named as Naneghat because it was used to collect toll from traders crossing through this hills.
Naneghat is a major landmark & easily visible when you from Kalyan towards Malshej Ghat. It is located at a distance of 55 km from Kalyan. The walls of Naneghat hills has come out from the main mountain range and offers an outstanding view of the big bend. This region and the caves are now very popular among tourists due to its amazing beauty & easy access from Malshej ghat road.

Naneghat hills are very famous among trekkers & hikers. Many people give a visit to this place in monsoon season due to its lush greenery & breathtaking views. This place has cool atmosphere & even more cold in the night. Trek to Naneghat is beautiful & simple. Naneghat trek route passes through thick green forest & is clearly marked. “Nanacha Angatha” is the base (it is the pinnacle of Naneghat) when you climb from the forest.
There is a big cave while going towards the top. You can rest or stay overnight in this cave. Cave has various inscriptions in Brahmi language. Inscriptions here are unique & valuable but they are diminishing due to weather effects & ignorance towards them. A big stoned vessel is also present at the entrance to the Ghat, which was used to keep coins collected in form of toll. It is one of the best trek routes in Maharashtra.

Naneghat Trek Difficulty Level:
Easy to moderate. First timers can also try this trek.
Time Required: It takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the top from the Vaishakhare.
Restaurants Nearby/ Eating Stuff: There are no eateries on the Naneghat trek route. So, carry your own food & plenty of water with you while visiting here. There are 3 small water reservoirs at the top out of them the last reservoir has drinking water. However, it’s good to carry water by yourself. Many restaurants and Dhaba’s are available on the Malshej ghat road to have food & water.
Accommodation/ Staying Options: There are few caves on the mountain top which can accommodate roughly 20-30 people at a time. Setting up your camp is a bit risky due to high winds. Hence Naneghat camping is not a good option to stay atop.
How To Reach Naneghat
If you are driving from Mumbai via Eastern Express Highway, then follow Kalyan – Murbad – Saralgaon – Naneghat route. There are 2 routes to reach Naneghat:
- You can reach here from Kalyan by ST buses plying regularly between Kalyan & Ahmednagar. Catch the bus up to Vaishakhare village. Starting poin tof trek is about 3 km away from the Vaishakhare. Follow a board showing diversion towards Naneghat.
- If you are proceeding from Pune or Junnar, Catch ST bus to Ghatghar & stop at Vaishakhare. It is about 30-40 minutes’ drive from Junnar to Naneghat. The distance between Junnar & Naneghat is 27 km.
- Nearest Railway Station: Kalyan railway station on the central railway is the convenient railhead to reach Naneghat hills. Then, you can catch ST buses from Kalyan ST bus depot.
