Earlier, this building was used to host concerts. The art gallery was established in 1954 & later opened to the public in 1996. The vision of the establishment of this gallery is to support the modern art trends in Indian culture. It is certainly among the best art galleries in the Maharashtra.
It has a brilliant collection of modern as well as old artworks. Maharaja of Jaipur used this beautiful building as his palace. The gallery has a rich collection of over 17,000 works from the period of 1850 onwards. This is one of the worth visiting spots in Mumbai.

The gallery exhibits arts of top 19th & 20th-century artists. The gallery building comprises of 5 exhibition halls, 1 auditorium, cafeteria, library, storage and office. National Gallery of Modern Art Mumbai History
This modern art gallery is directed by the Department of Culture of Government of India. The initial name of this building was Sir Cowasji Jehangir Public Hall but later it was changed as National Gallery of Modern Art Mumbai. In 1960’s, this place was a used for concerts and other similar ventures. But faced the resistance of people. Due to this reason, it was then converted into the art gallery.
National Gallery of Modern Art also has its branches at Baroda, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Shanti-Niketan. These branches display amazing Indian regional arts in that particular gallery. Gallery authorities also organize various exhibitions to encourage emerging Indian & foreign artists.
