Rankala Lake was constructed by the king of Kolhapur- Shri Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj . There is a temple of Rank Bhairav at the centre of the lake and this lake was named after this temple only. Rank bhairav is said to be an incarnation of lord Shiva. It is one of the popular lakes in Maharashtra.
A quarry has been formed inside the Rankala lake Kolhapur after an earthquake in 8th/9th century AD. As it has a temple of Shiva, it has a big unusual statue of Nandi Bull (the vehicle of Lord Shiva). This statue of Nandi moves in the direction of the lake for a distance of a single wheat grain every day and after some time it comes to its original position. It is said the when the Nandi idol will reach up to the lake then the whole world will get demolished. There is also a resort inside the lake known as Sandhya Math.
The formation of Rankala lake Kolhapur has an interesting story. Local people say that the stones for the construction of Malaxmi temple in Kolhapur were taken from this spot. So the depression of the lake was created due to quarries of stones used for the construction of Mahalaxmi temple. The lake is believed to be connected to a well in the Panhala Fort.
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj has crossed the lake from that well. Lake has 2 ghats with names Rajghat and Marathghat. Being one of the best tourist spots in Kolhapur, many citizens of Kolhapur as well as tourists visit Rankala chaupati in the evening.
