The garden of Sarasbaug is one of the important landmarks of Pune city. It is a very beautiful and well-maintained garden in the heart of the Pune city. Lying next to the Parvati hills, the garden has spread over a wide area of 25 acres (10 hectares). It was constructed by Nanasaheb Peshwe. This garden acts as a very nice recreational space in the city. A large number of people visit this spot every day including children as well as adults. Saras Baug in Pune lies between the Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum and the Parvati Hill.

The authorities are maintaining the lush green lawns nicely. Visitors cannot enter on grass lawns in some of the areas to protects them from footfalls. The entire garden has properly tiled roads inside it when people can do jogging or walking. A pre-recorded background music plays continuously through loudspeakers along walkways. The atmosphere of this place always remains cheerful!

It has big and lush green lawns all over the garden. Various species of flowers, bushes and trees add the charm to Saras baug in Pune. Garden has 2 common entry and exit points. A small river like the stream is present inside the garden that has a shallow depth. It has various colored fish species, turtles and lotus flowers. The fishes are very big and are only of recreational purpose. They roam in a group and you can even feed them. Children can enjoy fun rides and shopping of fun toys outside the Saras baug in Pune.

Saras Baug Garden History

300 years ago, this entire area was submerged under a lake having a small island at the center of it. Later on, when the lake dried up, it was developed into a garden. Earlier there were a large number of Saras Birds (Storks) in this area hence it was named as Sarasbaug. But nowadays very few Saras are there inside the garden. Saras baug in Pune spot was a garbage dumping ground during British era.

The maintenance of this garden was done properly from time to time by different people like Sawai Madhavrao Peshwe (1750 to 1784), East India Company (1842), Madhavrao Kumthekar & Anandrao Mane (1969) and by Pune Municipal Corporation thereafter!

There is also a temple of Lord Ganesh at the center of Saras baug in Pune. Temple lies on a small hillock at the center of the garden and you can get nice views of the garden from a temple. This temple is present at this place since ancient times when this spot was a big lake hence popular as Talyatla Ganpati.

You can buy worship goods like coconut and flowers for temple deity of Ganpati. It was built under the guidance of Sawai Madhavrao Peshwe and Mahadji Shinde. Visit to the temple make your mind peaceful and calm. There is also a museum right at the back of the temple having a nice collection of historic artifacts. Thousands of devotees give the visit to this temple on Ganesh Chaturthi and other holy occasions. A large number of people gather at Saras baug in Pune on Diwali Pahat and fly Sky lanterns!

The temple lies in such a way that the devotees can see the shrine of lord Ganesh from the main entrance on road.

The temple has water stream on its all sides. Few fountains are also there inside the garden. This is the biggest as well as the oldest garden of the Pune city. Other popular gardens like Empress Botanical Gardens and Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park are also there in the vicinity of Saras baug in Pune.

  • Temple Museum: The museum behind the temple has various historical artifacts and an array of Ganpati statues. Many other things made up of metal, wood and ivory are there inside this museum.
  • Parvati Temple: The beautiful temple complex of Parvati Hill lies in the backdrop of Sarasbaug. It is just 2 km away and you can see it from the bridge of Sarasbaug. Along with the temple, there were various palaces on this hill. The royal palace of the head of the Maratha Empire in the 18th & 19th century was there on the Parvati hill.
  • Zoo: A Zoo called Peshwe Park was opened in Saras baug in Pune during tits last major renovation activity. However, later on, all animals in the zoo were shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park.
