Temple History

Shree Shantadurga temple has a marvelous idol of Goddess Shree Durga. The idol has Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva on each side.  As per Hindu mythology, Shree Jagdamba Devi stopped the violent & extreme war going on between Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Goddess made peace (Shanti) between them and hence the temple is named so. The Shantadurga Devi idol was initially placed at Keloshi. But the location of an idol of the Goddess was shifted to Kavlem due to the rule of Portuguese.

The idol of the goddess was stolen by Pathans from the Shree Shantadurga Temple during 1898 A.D. Then in 1901, the new idol was installed on Wednesday, the Phalgun Shukl Dashmi-Shake 1823 (i.e. on 19 March 1902). This new idol was sculpted by Shri Laxman Krishnaji Gaitonde and still at its place till date.
