It is city’s only aquarium and holds more than 400 species of sea & sweet water fish. One can see a large number of fish species in the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. It is the oldest aquarium in India.

You can see various fishes in 9 sweet water tanks, 16 sea water tanks, and 32 tropical tanks. All these tanks are displayed with the help of LED lights. It is a very good place for children as they are exposed to a whole new world that that has never seen before. The water creatures wandering around various tanks certainly create a curiosity among children. This museum is one of the best tourist attractions in Mumbai.

The taraporewala Aquarium in Mumbai lies on the fascinating seashore of Marine Drive. Authorities have transformed the building into a high-tech Aquarium. They are planning to introduce amazing features such as an underwater sea walk and glass vision sea-world.

History of Taraporewala Matsyalaya

The aquarium got its name from the popular Parsi philanthropist – D B Taraporewala. He had donated 2 lacs rupees for the construction of the aquarium building whose total construction cost was 8 lac rupees in 1951. The aquarium was inaugurated by the 1st president of independent India – Dr.Rajendra Prasad.


Recently, the aquarium was closed for major renovation works. Taraporewala aquarium in Mumbai reopened for tourists on March 3, 2015. After the latest renovation of Aquarium in 2015, the complete makeover of the building was done. Since then a large number of exotic fish species were added to the collection. The cost of renovation was whopping 22 crore rupees.

  • There is a moss aquarium for pregnant fishes in the tropical segment of the museum.
  • Various imported water lilies and aquatic plants are present in this aquarium.
  • Fish Spa: 10 Fish spa tanks are also available inside the taraporewala aquarium in Mumbai where you can do the treatment of removing dead skin from your legs by Doctor fish (Garra Rufa).
  • Touch Pool: Tourists can touch turtles, starfish, sea cucumbers and sea urchins in the touch pool area.
  • Amphitheatre: A small auditorium of 50 seat capacity shows documentaries on marine ecosystems, environment conservation, and fish species.
  • Display of Ecosystems: Various coral and rocky ecosystems are exhibited with the help of aqua scaping and LED lighting.

Taraporewala Aquarium Tickets Fees / Entry Charges:

The ticket counter remains open between 10:00 am to 01:00 pm and 02:00 pm to 05:00 pm. Also, the tickets taken remain valid from 1 hour of purchase.

  • Indian Tourists: 30/- per child (below 12 years) and Rs.60/- per adult.
  • Foreign Tourists: 100/- per child and Rs.200/- per adult.
  • Students: 30/- per student.
  • Retired Government Employees: 40/- per person.
  • Government Employees: 30/- per person.
  • Disabled Person: 30/- per person.
  • Mobile Camera: 500/- per mobile camera.
  • Digital Camera: 5000/- per DSLR camera.
  • Video Shooting: Ticket of Rs.1000 needs to be taken for video shooting inside the Taraporewala Aquarium in Mumbai.

Timings: Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. Aquarium remains closed on Mondays. Aquarium also remains open on government and public holidays including Sunday and 2nd and 4 the Saturday of the month.

How To Reach

  • Nearest Railway Station: Churni Road Station on the western railway line is the closest railhead to reach the aquarium. It is just 10 minutes away from the station. If you are traveling from central or harbor railway line, then catch local from Dadar towards Churchgate and get down at Churni Road Station.
  • Nearest Airport: Mumbai airport is the nearest airport to reach Taraporewala Aquarium. You can catch taxis outside the airport till the aquarium.
